Nissan's big Patrol could not help but attract attention. It has a 4.8-litre straight-six petrol engine that produces 185kW and 420Nm.
But Nissan SA's big news was that it had been chosen to lead Nissan's re-entry into global motorsport, by designing, building and running three vehicles for the tough Paris-Dakar endurance race in January. And Giniel de Villiers, who has proved his skill on tracks and off-road in South Africa, has been chosen to race one of the vehicles.
For sportscar fans the Nissan highlight just had to be the 350Z, a more rounded, smoothed, altogether more modern version of the famous Nissan Z cars. This Nissan has a 3.5-litre V6 motor. It will reach SA in the second half of 2003.
Audi proudly launched the A8 4.2 Quattro, the flagship of its range, but at present it is in South Africa as a public-opinion tester. The new Audi Cabriolet, a genuine four-seater, was the other highlight, and it should be in South Africa by February.
Ford spoke of an "avalanche of launches" of new models over the next 18 months. Among the cars it unveiled were the restyled "New Edge" Fiesta, a diesel Focus, the V6 quad-cam Mondeo 220, and the Focus ST 170, which has a 2-litre engine and a six-speed gearbox that will see the car getting from 0-100km/h in 8.2 seconds.
Mazda showed an exciting Mazda 6 Sport, as well as a cute Mazda 2, a 1.5-litre vehicle aimed at the small-car end of the market.
Coming soon is the Mazda RX8 which, with a double rotary engine, should be a real tearaway.
The next XJ was the brightest star on the Jaguar stand, which was packed with many other admirable models, including the all-wheel-drive X-type and the sexy S-type, not to speak of the powerful XK models. These are cars to drool over.
So, too, was the Bentley Arnage R, a cultured monster with a 6.7-litre V8 that will propel the large vehicle to awesome accelleration and top speeds: 0-100km/h in a mere 6.3 seconds, and 0-160km/h in 15.3 seconds. Top speed is given at precisely 249km/h. The big motor puts out 298.3kW, or 400 brake horsepower, and a mind-numbing 835Nm at only 3250rpm. It is equipped with a five-speed auto gearbox. Now this is quite a car ...
MG Rover unveiled the MG XT 190, which is based on a Rover 75 floorplan, and had a couple of their X-power cars on show too.
The good news at Hyundai was that its revamped and much-improved Tiburon sportscar has finally been given the motor it deserves, a 2.7-litre V6, although it will still be available with its 2-litre engine.
Hyundai also unveiled the Getz, a versatile "supermini" that it hopes will become its biggest seller. Daihatsu had couple of newcomers - the two-seater convertible Copen, with a 600cc turbo motor, and the Extol people carrier which, despite being only a 1300cc, can cope with seven occupants. It even has an aircon. Both are expected to arriving in the next few months. The Extol, in particular, is expected to have a price advantage over rivals, as it will cost in the region of R150 000.
Peugeot had the 206 SW, said to be a combination of sportiness (with a 1.6-litre motor) and the functionality of a stationwagon. It seems to have more rear legroom than other 206s, and have the rear door handles snazzily disguised in the windowframe. It is expected to hit SA early next year.
The stand also featured the 206 world rally championship winning car, based on the 206, together with a rally-simulator game.
The new 307SW, with its dramatic glass roof and seven-seater capacity, will attract a lot of attention. On preview was the 807 multipurpose vehicle, being shown to gauge public response. It should be on sale by the middle of 2003.
Honda's stand featured a wide range of its products, from MPVs to motorbikes to saloon cars and power tools. The new minicar, the Jazz, is expected early in 2003, as is the CBR600 motorbike, which is said to share a lot of its technology with the Grand Prix championship winning Honda of Valentino Rossi.
A sporty new Honda Accord was also on show, with a motor producing 140kW and 220Nm.
