Based on the Model X concept vehicle that was originally unveiled at the 2001 Detroit auto show, Element is targeted to the 71-million-strong Generation Y crowdَthose "youthful" people who enjoy extreme sports such as surfing, kayaking, snowboarding, and mountain biking. Production will take place at Honda's East Liberty, Ohio, plant, which will churn out an expected 50,000 vehicles for 2003. Pricing will range from $16,000 to $21,000.

MAYBACH. After 60 years, Maybach is back this autumn. For two decadesَbetween 1921 and 1941, the "M" badge was the symbol for cars driven by Deutschland's elite. The limo-like sedans will be available in 225.2- and 242.5-inch lengths. (For comparison, a current S-class measures 203.1 inches long.) Maybachs will offer passengers individual reclining rear seats with automatically extending leg and foot supports; two flat-screen monitors linked to a DVD player; a Dolby surround sound system; four-zone climate control; and multi-contour seats. The sole power unit is a biturbo 5.5-liter 550-hp V-12 engine. Customers can actually watch their vehicles being built to their specifications.

Pontiac is heading in this direction. Under the hood is a supercharged 3800 Series II V-6 that produces 280 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, 19-inch wheels, and Z-rated rubber, the G-Force is capable of pulling 0.85g on the skidpad, according to Pontiac.

This is the SATURN SKY. Dunno......has some pizazz. The engine is GM's new Ecotec 2.2-liter four cylinder, which sports a low-boost supercharger and is good for 180 horsepower. Because this is a youthful car, the transmission is a shift-it-yourself five speed. Large 18-inch alloy wheels accentuate the lack of overhangs, and the sky blue paint job stresses Saturn's characteristic upswept lines.

Chrysler's Dieter Zetsche in the picture, or the production version of the Pacifica will not differ much from this concept vehicle, which was shown at the Detroit Auto Show. Called a "sports tourer," the six-passenger station wagon is being positioned as a vehicle with a low step-in height, first-class seating, three rows of seats and car-like handling. The Pacifica's equipment will include adjustable pedals, a load-leveling rear suspension, a second row of bucket seats with fold-flat capability and a cruising range of 400 miles.
